Andrew offers me his hand with that lopsided smile I used to find charming, but I’m hesitant to accept it. He’s Andriel now, I have to remind myself, and I have a lot to learn about him. Yes, he looks like Andrew—sort of—but he doesn’t touch my heart as he used to. This unfamiliar Andriel causes icky goosebumps to creep down my back.

I don’t accept his hand. Instead, I motion for him to show me the way. He frowns but starts moving.

We pass by ten cells on the left and nine on the right. I don’t know if they have any prisoners inside—it’s quiet besides our light footsteps. Well, his footsteps are quiet, mine are like a mammoth in a China cabinet.

Andrew doesn't say a word as we walk up a flight of stone stairs. The light, flickering on the walls, is bright and reminds me of candlelight, but different. It feels… alive. Like even the light itself has its own mind. It’s a weird sensation, but I feel like I’m being watched, and the eyes are in every single molecule of this place.

It’s so clean everywhere, even in the dungeon. Not a speck of dust. The higher we get, the cleaner the air is. On the very top, it’s so pure and so rich that I can’t help but suck in a lungful of air as if I was drowning before and was deprived of oxygen. Real oxygen, the one that gives life. The moment I do it, my body fills with new energy. And I’m loving it.

Andrew is still quiet. My rejection is heavy in the air. I know I should have probably agreed to everything until I find a way to get away from there, but I’m mad at him for so many things that I can’t just close my eyes to it all.

Where do I even start? He’d been lying about who he was and the fact he had been alive all this time. No matter how much I want to, I can’t simply erase the years we spent together with the snap of my fingers. I watch his squared shoulders ahead of me, his proud head held high. I can’t help but notice his lack of muscles.

Wait, what?

I’ve never liked muscly men, so how come now it’s what I’m missing in him? I used to love every detail of his body. And now, out of nowhere, I find him lacking… I blame the damn vampire.

At the top of the stairs, we step into a spacious room, and I squint my eyes at the sudden light. When they finally adjust to the brightness, I look around. It looks like a massive barrack filled with soldiers.

Everywhere I look, trees spring from the floor and rise up to the enormous ceiling, their branches clash on the very top, forming a dome. The fresca on the tiles under my feet is alive. Literally alive. It’s moving with each step, changing its pattern and color.

A humongous fireplace, big enough to
